John Oates (from the album Reunion

John Oates (from the album Reunion available on Jasper Productions) (by Bryant Liggett)
Don’t get your hopes up. This reunion isn’t the reunion you are expecting out of John Oates as it doesn’t involve his past partner. That is A-OK as Oates is more than the 2nd name in a 1980’s act that dropped a load of hits. With half a dozen releases of his own doing, his sixth being Reunion, he continues to prove he’s a solid Folkie with a few musical hooks up his sleeve. He opens the record with the title track, Oates voice delivering the Folk cut soft and sentimental as het hits on the idea of his aging father soon reuniting with his late mother. He follows the title track with another soft cut, giving a big nod to John Prine with a solid cover of “Long Monday”.
“This Field is Mine” is an earthy cut, the song narrator laying claim to a piece of the land, he gives another nod to folkie Allan Fraser covering “Dance Hall Girls” and “When Carolina Comes Home Again” is a sad and somber, end of summer weeper.
This isn’t the pop music that John Oates was known for in the past. It’s coffee house Folk, with John Oates sticking in the mellow and introspective Folk-world. Which is a great place for him to be, as he’s certainly no one-trick or pop-hit pony. (by Bryant Liggett)
