Call them Folk music royalty. Both Tom Paxton and John McCutcheon have spent decades of writing, recording and the road under their belts, two classic Roots troubadours with a load of songs under the belts, spilling out of their hearts and mouths. Together Again finds the pair combining their collective talents, dropping a thick record of full-blown Roots music. They know a Folkie when they hear one, the opening cut in “The Future” finding the two singing about hearing about Folk music to come. “Old Dog” is a weeper that will make you want to find your canine and give him a hug, “I Ran Away with the Circus” is a romantic ballad where title says it all, and there’s a haunting clawhammer banjo that pulses through “Pathfinder”. There’s a minimal vibe to the Celtic heavy “Seargent O’Reilly” as it’s a catchy cut with voice only. Heavy pedal steel in the western “Cheatin’ While I’m Eatin”, a cut that’s as funny as it is Country catchy, and perhaps the two are laying down some foreshadowing regarding careers well lived in the closer of “Lay this Old Guitar Down”; it’s a task those two have earned. These songs are homey, like your favorite uncles are playing these cuts for family gathering in a warm living room. They’re also thick with instrumentation, in most cases a drifting fiddle floating between the lyrics, a soon to be classic Folk record dropped by a couple of vintage Folkies.
