Joelton Mayfield (from the album Crowd Pleaser

Joelton Mayfield (from the album Crowd Pleaser available on Bloodshot Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
While Crowd Pleaser, the recent release from Joelton Mayfield, is a debut, the songs are the result of the past decade’s observations and reflections from the songwriter. While the stories do not mark out specific events, the words form the journey of Joelton Mayfield from his time as a smalltown church music director in Texas to a songman now living in Nashville, and becoming a bright light in the Indie Americana and Alt Country community. The song cycle starts off with first cut “Red Beam” displaying random thoughts and memories tacked to a sheet of ambient sounds. The acoustic guitar quiets underneath the story in “Jacob Dreamed a Staircase” while electric notes spark the hard-driving rhythms for “Turpentine (You Know the One”) in a tale of lost songs and the struggle of up-and-coming musicians.

As a storyteller, Joelton Mayfield is not afraid to cross the line into uncomfortable topics. His vision is clear as he wades through personal issues of upbringing, slicing and dicing old beliefs with sharp consideration of his own growth. He reaches “The Shore” on a continually rising beat while the story in “Now” spreads out on a slowly unraveling rhythm and “Baltimore” treads on a wary footfall beat. Crowd Pleaser welcomes “Pretty Linda” and points the finger of “Blame” over a sharp-angled groove as Joelton Mayfield explains his life as a “Speechwriter”, exiting the album with confessions in “Mouth Breather”.
