Releasing his debut on the newly-minted Black Opry Records, Jett Holden soars with The Phoenix. Sweet Soul vocals read tales of raw emotion as Jett Holden digs deep with lots of stories form the perspective of a black queer man growing up in the rural South. His songs get personal when he relates his own coming out story as the “Scarecrow” and is joined by Charlie Worsham and John Osborne on the unabashed love song in “Backwoods Proclamation”. Jett Holden provides a backstory for the confessions in “Better Off” sharing that the cut ‘is a song I wrote after leaving a controlling relationship. Part of me still loved him, and wanted to believe that things would get better. He wasn't always awful, just more often than not. But at that time, he was the only person I felt I had. It wasn't until I was more fed up than I was heartbroken that I could leave. This song captures the dichotomy of emotions I felt following my departure. Half of me was relieved he was gone, while the other half thought I was making a mistake. Maybe I'm better off, or maybe I'm delusional’. His words tell of his experience and, in turn, the daily dramas and successes Jett Holden walks through play out as universal themes. Produced by Will Hoge, friends stopped the studio to help with the recording. Emily Scott Robinson joined in the lost love story of “When I’m Gone” while Cassadee Pope shares opinions on “Karma”. Jett Holden opens The Phoenix drawing the line at becoming “Taxidermy” for a Facebook page as gnarly guitar licks and a hammering beat support the spell of “Necromancer” while time and distance become the countdown for “6,5,6,11” and quietly lays a foundation with acoustic fingerpicking to hear stars tell their tales under a “West Virginia Sky”. Somber piano notes begin the procession when Jett Holden puts a goodbye into “Perfect Storm”.
