Jesse Welles (from the album Middle

Jesse Welles (from the album Middle available as a self-release) (by Danny McCloskey)
Jesse Welles is making promises when he sings ‘I’m gonna squeeze everything I can out of every grain of sand’ as he watches the hourglass let loose its prize in “Every Grain of Sand”. Grabbing on and holding tight is the advice he doles out with “Horses”, asking “Why Don’t You Love Me” on a heart-hammering beat, riding a rolling rhythm to relate the observations in “Wheel”, and becoming the “Rocket Man” on a runaway rhythm. Collecting his stories on Middle, Jesse Welles puts the pro in prolific with well-crafted songs, as the recent release follows following two album releases in 2024. His songs are fueled by the passion in his delivery and a clear-eyed vision of the life around him. Jesse Welles came to the attention of the music-loving masses by filming his daily output of songs on a smartphone and posting to YouTube, filming in the Arkansas wilderness where he grew up and currently resides.
While he appreciates his own abilities, it is the inspiration that others can glean from his words and music the lights him up, Jesse Welles stating that ‘if my music helps you believe you can make art and tell the world how you feel, there would be nothing better. I hope you get those paints out of the garage or fill up your journal. Turn on your phone and say what you need to say. There’s so much wild stuff in my head. I want to see where it can go’.  Over a rumbling beat accented with jangling guitars, Jesse Welles pounds out the must-hear message of “Fear is the Real Killer” while he becomes distracted by the fantasy lives in his head for “Anything but Me”. A tangle of notes is the sonic wrapping for “Simple Gifts” as Jesse Welles shouts out a lyrical flow when he admits “I’m Sorry” and over a rumble of rhythm claims “War is a God” as Middle exits the album on the stripped-back delivery of the title track.
