Swedish Americana artist, Jesper Lindell, pays tribute to his musical heroes on his third album 3614 Jackson Highway. Not content to admire his heroes from afar, Lindell travelled to Alabama to record the album at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound studio (Hence the album’s title). The result is a musical love letter to classic 60’s Soul. With a voice as smooth as James Hunter and as powerful as Joe Cocker, Jesper Lindell reinterprets Vintage Soul (and one surprising Country) standards, making them distinctly his own.
“Pretend I Never Happened” is an unexpected, soulful take on the Willie Nelson classic. Lindell’s band, The Brunnsvik Sounds, employ Hammond organ, piano, and scorching electric guitar to transport the iconic song from the back roads of Texas to the dance bars of Beale Street. Jesper Lindell and his bandmates manage to make The Staples Singers’, “Heavy Makes You Happy”, even more ebullient than the sun-soaked original. Proving he’s not afraid to cover legends, Lindell delivers a laidback, soulful take on Elvis Presley’s “I’ve Got a Thing About You Baby”. Sometimes changing tempo, sometimes adding flashes of organ, sometimes changing vocal phrasing, Lindell reinvigorates Soul classics like “If Love Was Money”, “Respect Yourself”, “Rainy Night in Georgia”, “She Ain’t Gonna Do Right”, and “Drift Away”. Through each song, Lindell’s voice resonates with pathos, pain, and yearning yet to each note he adds a touch of defiant optimism. Smiling through his tears, Jesper Lindell sounds more like a man born in Dixie in the early 1900’s than a man born in Scandinavia at the turn of the new millennium. (by Brian Rock)
