For his recent release, the Shooter Jennings-produced Decades, Jeremy Pinnell widens the net for the tough-living characters and hard-edged honky tonk sound of his songs. Country tales with a Rock’n’Roll bite ride in the wishes of “Save You” as soft strums define a path when “Set Me Free” seeks salvation and “We’ve Been Wrong” uses its Blues backing to point a judgmental finger. Decades frames its songs with a musical edge, the backing band of live in-studio performances featuring A-list players such as Chris Masterson (Steve Earle, The Mastersons), and Ted Russell Kamp (Shooter Jennings), among a host of others. A hush falls on “Come Home to Me” as it makes its pleas while guitar notes poke out like spikes for the equally sharp confessional words of “Stuck in the Rain” and a fat bass line leads into the amped-up groove of “Too Much Sugar”. Decades begins its song cycle wearing the skin of “Barabbas” as it lands in “Dallas” on a Rock’n’Roll honky tonk beat while Jeremy Pinnell exits the album swaying to a Country rhythm with a toast of “Pink Champagne”.
