Stepping away from a career upswing, Jennie Arnau put playing music aside to take care of a family health crisis. The plan was for a short-term hiatus, and slowly the calendar pages turned and she was a decade away from recording. While Jennie felt that time had taken away a bright spot in her life, she listened to the encouragement of friends who suggested that ‘it would be a good idea to reconnect with my love of playing and the joy it has always brought me. I decided they might be right. I realized I wanted to hear the songs that mean so much to me, that carry so many memories, and are filled with so much love, played by my chosen family. I realized I needed to share this experience with those who have supported me through all my highs and lows’. The songs, and the emotional insights they provide, are collected on the recent Jennie Arnau release, A Rising Tide, her first studio recording in fifteen years. An incoming sense of a daily Armageddon rolls into A Rising Tide with opening cut “Oceans Rise”, Jennie Arnau admitting ‘its’s the little things that make it so hard, a better man in my head than in my heart’. Soft chord strums gently embrace the well-wishes in “Better Luck Next Time” while Jennie Arnau discusses the pros and cons of “Mabel” as she ponders how a child can understand a broken world in “Young & Alone”. The ringing voice of a Folk singer is gifted to the songs of A Rising Tide by Jennie Arnau as she steps lightly on the rhythmic bounce confessions of “Countryman”, walks with slowly trudging footfalls on the beat of “Back to Carolina”, marks “One If by Land” on the percussive patter of guitar notes and strides on confident beats to describe the ways of “Simple Man”. An easy rhythm brings hints of Jazz into the natural Folk tone of A Rising Tide with “Sail Away”. Jennie Arnau sharing her words as a reminder for both herself, and others, that ‘you will be okay. You just need to put one foot in front of the other and give yourself a little time. It takes patience. Move gently- give yourself grace. Tomorrow will shine again’.
