Jeff Crosby is keeping it rough around the edges. The Idaho-born singer/songwriter must know the key to keeping it real is keeping it rough; with a gritty voice, a pushy guitar, and perhaps some dirt under the fingernails of the hands playing that guitar, he’s breathing some solid life into the songs of his latest Another Petal Falls Off of the Rose. He opens the record with “Out in the Country”, kicking the album off like a loose jam, six loose and subtle picks on the electric guitar kick off a laid-back cut that dabbles in the Southern Rock world, the guitar solo served up as aggressive but loose. Jeff Crosby’s a solid balladeer; there’s optimism in the ballad “Silver Lining”, with Crosby singing ‘keep mining, for a silver lining’ and he keeps it minimal in “Lose Ya”, a track with light guitar and very little percussion, a shaker being the dominant source of rhythm. There is greatness is in its sparseness. “Memory And a Dream” is a cut with beautiful jangle and dreamy keys in a mid-tempo ballad, while “Jokes on Me” is a fun bouncer that’s thick with slide guitar and pedal steel, a solid Roots-Rocker on a solid, Roots Rock release. With no styles overpowering others, this is textbook, catch-all Americana. Some parts Blues, others 1970’s Psychedelic Folk. Add grit, keep it unpolished, mix it with subtle hints of Southern Rock and your album is complete.
