Red dirt heroes Jason Boland & The Stragglers stretch the borders of their sound, showing the love of Honky Tonk Country Rock’n’Roll from Texas to Fresno and across the Southern states as the band namecheck NYC shows, and make mention of how radio dials in the Northwest keep the antennas pointed south when they tribute the “Next to Last Hank Willams”. The story traces the life of a hardcore troubadour who now tosses back Beaujolais and tokes weed, and opens The Last Kings of Babylon, the recent release from Jason Boland & The Stragglers. As the band celebrate their 25th anniversary, the tracks spread over The Last Kings of Babylon offer audio snapshots from the life of a touring band, Jason Boland sharing that ‘this album is a mirror. It’s a retrospective, a reflection of everywhere we’ve been and everything we’ve learned over the last 25 years on the road. These songs are about the journey. We were searching for something when we started this band, and we’re still out there searching for it now’. On a runaway beat Jason & The Stragglers shout out “Ain’t No Justice” while they offer Outsider advice in “One Law at a Time”, stomp out a leaving story for “Drive”, give 420 a hi-five with “High Time”, and feel the pull of the highway as they quietly slip out the door on an “Irish Goodbye” while family history tells the tale of “Farmall”. Jason & The Stragglers finally find their way back home only to discover love already packed up and demanding “Take Me back to Austin”. The Last Kings of Babylon sings songs familiar to anyone happy to hear the whine of tires on asphalt. Jason Boland & The Stragglers exit the album with a nod to the brothers and sisters they pass on the highway in “Buffalo Return to the Plains”.
