The Blues and Janiva Magness are connected by a bond impossible to sever. She stages The Blues as a pain that questions someone who showed “The Same Love That Made Me Laugh” could become the person ripping her into pieces as she lays out her attempts to salvage love as a kiss-off in “I Was Good to You Baby”. Both admissions are delivered with the power of her voice on her recent release, Back for Me. While “Down So Low” has been delivered by female powerhouses such as Etta James, Tracy Nelson (Mother Earth), Linda Ronstadt and Ellen MacIlwaine, Janiva Magness brings a prowess to the words that puts her version way up on the top shelf. Friend/fans stopped by the studio to lend their talents to Back for Me. Joe Bonamassa’s guitar accents Janiva Magness’ vocals as she opens the album with “Masterpiece”, exiting Back for Me with Jesse Dayton assisting on the Delta boogie of “Hittin’ on Nothin’”. Continuing with the theme of Guitar Gods inclusion on the recording, Sue Foley plugs in and fills in “Holes” with tasty licks. A slow smooth groove is the soundtrack for the Back for Me title track as Janiva Magnes ponders “Do I Need You” on a mighty rumble as she hops on a determined groove to stand tall for a goodbye with “You Can Bring Me Flowers”.
