The ‘A-word’ as a music descriptor, despite being pinned on Folk and Roots music, is, in this writer’s opinion, a catch-all that covers anything from Duke Ellington to Black Flag. It’s apt to define all American music, which will include J. Isaiah Evans & The Boss Tweed, their latest in Americana Radio being a Hammond organ heavy Garage Rock release with a Punk Roots Rock additive, custom made for sweaty clubs.
This trio gets after it. Opening Americana Radio with a mindset to R-O-C-K. “Let’s Rock” does just that, an out of the gate charger with slamming and banging power chords. The title track gives a subtle and honorable nod to an Elvis Costello radio song that finds Evans dropping all the references to what is Americana. “A Thing for You” is a cool lounge cut and the band oozes emotion in “Hat in Hand”. There’s big boogie in the smoking instrumental, “The Devil Makes Three (Coche Del Diablo)”, and J Isaish Evans & The Boss tweed rev up the Blues for “Ruby Anne.” (by Bryant Liggett)
