There was a time when Country music wasn’t Pop music. That time was decades ago. The same real-feel to the music returns when you dig into an artist like India Ramey. Don’t call it throwback when artists like Ramey fly a flag of what was and what is, her latest, My Villain Era, is a 21st Century dose of American Country music, a soon to be classic offering of two-stepping Honky Tonk beats and Western Outlaw noir.
 
That Outlaw Country vibe is present in the Spaghetti Western ready opener, as “We Ride at Dawn” eagerly scores a charge into town ready for a gunfight. “Scattered and Smothered” is a sordid tale of ‘a hot mess’ matching her look to fit after a night out, becoming a ‘welcome to my nightmare’ Rocker in desperate need of a cheap breakfast to sober up while India Ramey keeps a slight bit of Country twang as she takes on a sultry lounge cut, the wonderful “Six Feet Under”.“Cryin’ In My Lingerie” is a very direct tale about a relationship where the love has been kicked to the curb, “Cult Money” knocks organized religion, addressing its takers and givers. India Ramey closes like she opens the album, exiting with “Ghost Town”, a cut that’s more Western than Country.
Throw this on with the Tammy Wynette’s and the Loretta Lynn’s, and you’ll think it may be 1978. But My Villain Era is not dates as India Ramey proves shit-kicking Country is alive and well in 2026. (by Bryant Liggett)
