Iain Matthews (from the album How Much is Enough available on Iain Matthews & Pitch Perfect/Sunset Blvd Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
Over the course of several decades Iain Matthews has curated, cultivated, and continued to release a healthy output of Folk Rock records. From his beginnings in British Folk as a founding member of Fairport Convention, moving forward with the Rock’n’Roll and Folk of Matthew’s Southern Comfort before venturing into a solo career, Iain Matthews has stood behind the microphone with a purpose. His recent release, How Much is Enough, stays the course with Folk-based songs given a backbeat. It envisions a relationship between “The Bird and the Fish”, wondering ‘where would they build their nest’ as Iain Matthews offers an introduction in “She’s a Digital Girl”, lends the natural Soul of his voice to call out ‘come on down’ to the “Rhythm & Blues”, and follows a sparkle of guitar notes into “New Dark Ages”.

A dreamscape melody sets the course for “Good Intentions” as Iain Matthews admits “It’s Complicated” and confidently struts on the rhythms of “I Walk” while How Much is Enoughasks its question in the title track surrounded by a flurry of finger-picked guitar notes and melting electric piano trills. How Much is Enough sings the story of a trainman for “Santa Fe Line” as an audio drama plays out in “Turn and Run” while Iain Matthews borders the release with its opening cut drifting on the Soulful Folk of “Ripples in a Stream”, and exiting on the whispered one-on-one philosophies of “Oh Baby”.
