2/15/2025 HORSEBATH (from the album Another FarewellHORSEBATH (from the album Another Farewell available on Strolling Bones Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
HORSEBATH will make you feel like it is 1972. While very much a 2025 band, the Canadian quartet of vocalists and multi-instrumentalists are old souls with an old-school vibe, dropping cuts on their latest release, Another Farewell, is one part Roots Boogie alongside dreamy Psychedelic twang and a touch of Laurel Canyon-era Folk Rock. Another Farewell is a little bit of everything, mostly just laid-back fun. That aforementioned Boogie is found first, and foremost, in album opener, “Hard to Love”, where barroom piano bounces all over the cut, delivering a head-bobbing and foot moving vibe. “In the Shade” is a track that may even take you back farther than 1972 with its acid meanderings, “Really Did a Number of Me” has a hop-a-along feel where they dig into care-free parlor music as “Long & Lonesome” dips into some desert-noir while also channeling some of the easy Rock of J.J. Cale. “Train to Babylon” is a fun Rocker where the takeaway is wonderful harmonies that float over along at a swaying, chug-a-long pace. HORSEBATH close out Another Farewell with a fun blast of Boogie Blues for “Turn My Lover Loose.” If there’s any music in the world that is timeless, this is it, as Another Farewell will fool anyone into thinking it has a release date that’s 50 years old. HORSEBATH is a band with one ear on yesterday and the other dialed into tomorrow, and both feet quickly moving them into the future; they may sound like the past but they’re also quite ripe for 2025 and then some.
