Gurf Morlix is a Gothic Folkie, the kind of musician whose brand of Folk music leans more into the dark and ambient, sonics that shy away from upbeat festival flair. Blues based, rough around the edges, and carrying an air of mystery, the appeal of his latest A Taste of Ashes is its dark dirtiness. The album opener in “This Is Real” is delivered with a hushed voice and quiet picking, the lyrics making the cut a secret admission between friends. “More of These Blues” finds Morlix treading into the Psychedelic Blues realm, with heavy guitar fills that rear a sleepy head throughout the cut, those Blues continuing into “Life is the Question”, a cut that also conjures a lazy, dark lounge vibe and the great line “what’s life, if you’re not obsessed”. It is a phrase that digs into the great ideal that you should fall in love with some craft and chase that love like you’re possessed. “Mama Juju” is a gritty cut that will have you immersed in its natural voodoo, and the closer in “Kapow Kaboom” is a Blues cut that digs deep into North Mississippi, Hill Country Blues sounds, with a stomping rhythm that inspires a slow boogie. This is music that shuns any illumination, sounds that could score your personal mystery unfolding in a dark corner of a dirty bar.
