Solo musicians with guitars have their work cut out for them as it takes a lot to hold the attention of anyone with just six strings and a pocketful of songs. A rough and tumble dude like Grayson Capps, however, remains up to the challenge, ready to revel in stripped down simplicity while serving up a lot with a little. It’s the approach on his latest, Heartbreak, Misery & Death, where the Alabama native (Alabama remains home to so many killer musicians) offers crushing covers from classic Folkies, armed only with his guitar and his gruff croon, joined by Corky Hughes doling out beautiful and perfectly placed guitar fills. It's stripped down right out of the gate with album opener “Wake Up Little Maggie”, the cut utilizing nothing but Grayson Capps vocal, as lonely as the tale in the tune. The 1927 cut “Columbus Stockade Blues” comes with cosmic guitar, and his version of “Moody River,” with all due respect to Pat Boone, has way more grit than Mr. Boone; a song about a river taking your lover NEEDS grit. Grayson Capps takes no liberties on Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain” and why should he, on something so perfect that you want to honor, not change, and that idea rolls along with Leonard Cohens “Hallelujah”. Capps owns both covers while also being gracious nods to the originals. Let Heartbreak, Misery & Death be the accompanying soundtrack to Grayson Capp’s musical story. These are songs that speak of his upbringing, a listen in on what was playing in the Capps house, and what pushed the man into music.
