The sound of the music that Gráinne (grawn-yah) Duffy collects on her recent release, What Am I Supposed to Do, are familiar amid a new brand of sonics created by the artist specifically for her own songs. Influences from Soul, Blues, and Rock’n’Roll are present yet Gráinne Duffy carves out her own place in the wide range of Roots music. Based in Monaghan, Ireland, What Am I Supposed to Do showcases an artist equally comfortable behind the hammering advice of “Got to Give It Up”, the chill confessions in “Hurts Just the Same”, and the grinding stomp march of its title track.
 
The story of her life in the Blues began in 2007 with the debut album, Out of the Dark. Over the course of nearly twenty years recording, Gráinne Duffy had garnered multiple Blues nominations and awards. What Am I Supposed to Do is a template for the diversity that the Blues enjoys when Gráinne Duffy admits to the loss of her free will in the Country guitar jangle of “Taking My Heart Away” and struts the “Streets of Love” on a feral groove. Gnarly guitar notes poke and prod at the look in the mirror that reflects “Tragedy” while angular notes build a framework for “Tearing Me Apart” as a funky undertow drags flesh and bone listeners into the rattling boogie of “Early in the Morning”. A slow salvational march of the Blues wraps its arm around Gráinne Duffy as it leads towards an exit from What Am I Supposed to Do on the seductive pull of “Need Your Love So Bad”. (by Danny McCloskey)
