Grace Potter (from the album Medicine

Grace Potter (from the album Medicine available on Hollywood Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
Recorded at LA’s historic The Village Studios, Grace Potter and producer T-Bone Burnett constructed the singer’s latest release, Medicine. The album is a sonic shift from her past Roots-oriented releases, evidenced immediately when opening track “Before the Sky Falls” rises up on slowly layered instrumentation that support Grace Potter’s hope of ‘falling in love before the sky falls’. The Medicinetitle track breathes heavy rhythms underneath a story of lost love as Grace Potter answers “That Phone” on chopped chords and floats on ambient notes that surround “The Shore”.

Beyond the master-class songwriting and emotive vocal performance in Medicine, Grace Potter deserves major accolades for the patience exhibited in bringing the album to the public. Recorded in 2008, Medicine was shelved due to a series of events, Grace Potter recalling ‘I remember being in the studio with T Bone and feeling like this was everything I’d been waiting for. It never occurred to me that the album might not get released, but I’m at peace with the fact that it’s taken this long. This is an album that truly belongs in its own space, and I’m so happy to finally give it the platform I know it deserves’. The sweet sound of vintage Soul surrounds Grace Potter when she discusses finances with “Money” while a dreamlike soundscape creates the illusion of notes and rhythms melting in “Colors”. Grace Potter takes the “Low Road” on a snaking groove and walks across a hammering drumbeats spattered with snarling electric guitar accents for “Paris (Ooh La La)”.  Matters of the heart receive attention when a rattle of rhythm circles Grace Potter as she questions love in “Losing You” while she welcomes her power with “Make You Cry”, exiting Medicine on the marching beat of her own exit for “Goodbye Kiss”.
