The debut from New England-based Gnarly Darling hits on all things Roots. With Americana taking on the definition for anything acoustic, call their self-titled release is a textbook example of the genre. It is a space where front porch melodies support strong vocals with heavy harmonies (from three vocalists) as the band digs into the realm of Blues and loose acoustic Rock. The opener in “Welcome to the Cheap Seats” features Jessi Rigordaeva’s warm croon, Pete Lassey’s harmonica, and Ryan Feeley’s guitar that has a hint of psychedelia; it’s a solid album opener. Gnarly Dalring are a band that can nail ballads. “Drift” and “Barnflower” are both dramatic, the former stretched out, the latter steadily paced with Rigordaeva’s vocals delivered with a subtle scat before she reaches out into a Gospel tone. “Words Carry Over the Water”, with more of Rigordaeva’s vocals, is uber-catchy. Gnarly Darling find “Beauty in a Bruise”, the thumper of the bunch that harkens to Southern California Roots Rock of the early 1980’s, and that vibe rolls into “Bottle Rockets”. The vocal scat returns in the closer “Little Fences” as that floating harmonica pushes the tune right alongside that killer voice of Rigordaeva’s, a cut that ends on the Rock’n’Roll side. This is a clean release, its beauty in its straight-ahead simplicity… with few bells and whistles, what you hear is what you get as Gnarly Darling stands tall via solid songwriting and playing.
