Ghalia Volt’s Blues is enticing to traditionalists, the Punk Rockers, and the Power Pop purveyors. The Belgium born, now Big Easy resident’s latest in Burn the House Down covers some ground. The sound is dirty and rough, bouncy and rocking… hell, there’s even cuts that dig into Psychedelia. Burn the House Down is a blast of music that is tied to tradition and gutsy enough to forge a path into the future.
 
The “No Ice Please” album opener takes a page out of the Old School Blues handbook. The track is drenched in grit, a dirt road bouncer that sets up the catchy riffed and lounge ready sultry strains of “Mine”. “Ride” is a cut that is ready for a Blues festival stage yet comes with a club-ready beat, a tune that is primed for DJ sampling. “Lucifers Grip” proves Ghalia Volt pays attention to the Indie Blues. The tune sounds inspired by modern Blues Rock, “Wreckin’ & Rollin’” has a jumpy Rockabilly beat, the title track is slowed down with a Psychedelic-vibe, and that feeling continues in the trancey and trippy “River Song”.
Wrapping up Burn the House Down with the stripped-down “Black and White”, Ghalia Volt delivers a short closer with subtle scatting over sparse guitar parts. It is a simple but satisfying closer. Blues music is an American-made genre that always deserves a shot in the arm, and Ghalia Volt has the syringe. (by Bryant Liggett)
