Gasoline Lollipops are at the Front Range of Colorado bands flirting with the ‘Denver Sound’ and then some. That ‘extra’ is a vibe where American Roots Rock rubs elbows with the boogie of Little Feat and the Punk Alt Country of The Gun Club. The Denver Sound is where you’ll find Roots music two-steppin’ with the goth crowd. All of these sounds are on full display on Gasoline Lollipops latest in Kill the Architect. Boogie drives the album right at the start on the killer opener, “Tennessee Nights”, a cut with vivid lyrics that detail southern drug-running with people that your parents likely wouldn’t find approval. “Honeysuckle and Poison” starts as a slow ballad before turning into a thick Country tale where the band shines, from harmonies to Country guitar picking and beautiful piano, while the title track is a full blown, raspy-vocal ripper that falls into Hard Rock territory. There’s a Morphine vibe in “Humanity” while “Come Here to Die” is textbook Alt Country driven by a locomotive drum beat where the keys and guitar are punched and picked like a race is on. That charge is amplified on “Elvis”, where Gasoline Lollipops prove they can be a hardcore band just as much as a Country band. While we’re saying what they can be, add cool lounge act into the mix, which is a sound they drop on the closer “The River”. Gasoline Lollipops prove that Roots Rock can’t, and perhaps shouldn’t, be defined.
