12/13/2025 Forest Sun (from the album All Hearts are FreeForest Sun (from the album All Hearts are Free available as a self-release) (by Bryant Liggett)
Forest Sun has nailed the formula to score your pour one and/or roll one vibe. While part of Forest Sun’s self-description of his latest in All Hearts Are Free includes a sense of place when he explains the record as ‘California Reggae’, the laidback tones of the album are a mood changer whether you are in the Golden State, or any other of the 49 sibling states, or for the remainder of the territories surrounding our globe. There is a groovy riff that peppers the opening title track as Forest Sun sings of getting away, as he’s ‘had enough of the machinery, I think I need a change of scenery’ and that hit the road motif lives throughout the entirety of All Hearts Are Free. “Brother and Brother” gives a heavy nod to old-school reggae, “Cast Me on Your Shore” is a beautiful ballad with soft vocals and harmonies that moves Forest Sun into seriously Folk territory, and the horns are thick on “I’m Only Lonely when I’m with You”, a breakup song has never been so fun. Most musicians at one point in their career have covered Bob Dylan, and All Hearts Are Free is no different as Forest Sun knocks out a superb version of “Lay Lady Lay” (featuring Lara Louise) offering a return to harmonies with few liberties taken, the exception being giving the cut a slight Reggae vibe. Closing All Hearts Are Free with Forest Sun’s take on Loungey-Exotica, “Walk the Path That’s Yours” is ripe for your tango or time in the dark, Cocktail Lounge. Folk, Lounge and Reggae, All Hearts Are Free is an album to score your escape.
