Fantastic Negrito (from the album Son of a Broken Man

Fantastic Negrito (from the album Son of a Broken Man available from Storefront Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz aka Fantastic Negrito has a message for his father. While said message is coming from Dphrepaulezz the man, it is also coming from Fantastic Negrito the musician. It’s a personal update that comes with subtle spite, and even a ‘look what I did without you’ narrative. Define the message as you will, while also knowing it is more from Fantastic Negrito’s soundtrack of Psychedelic Soul and fuzzy-Garage Funk. Son of a Broken Man is a personal record from the heart and mind that provides a tripped-out groove so the rest of the body can dance.
The ambient, stream of conscious interlude of “First to Betray Me” opens the album with sampled phrases over quick snippets of keyboards and strings, quickly giving way to fuzzy, Garage Punk guitar and an angry voice in “Runaway from You”. While Fantastic Negrito can break a heart with soulfully loaded from-the-gut ballads like “I Hope Somebody’s Loving You”, the trippy curveballs will stick with you. There’s anger in “Goddamn Biscuit”, and a laidback, hearty groove for “Devil in My Pocket”. By the time you get to “California Loner” you’ll be reveling in the over-all coolness of this whole record; despite the personal message you’ll want the score to soundtrack your moves. The brief, under one-minute additives like “Zollifer Files” and “The Children are Waiting” are part of those aforementioned curveballs of sampled greatness.
The animated closer in “This Little Light of Mine” comes with funky-handclaps that add to its fun and playfulness.  Fans of Sly Stone and George Clinton as well as Outkast \and Captain Beefheart will soak-up in this release’s boldness; like his past records, this jam is flat out cool. (by Bryant Liggett)
