Esther Rose (from album Want

The album art for Want, the recent release from Esther Rose, shows two sides of the artist as she stands on a desert plain with a double image, one showing her in a flowing cotton vintage gown while in the partnered picture she is reaching for the sky in a body suit of a shiny synthetics. Like the cover images of the release, Esther Rose borders the song roster with two times the title track, “Want”, a story featuring desires on an open range moving from the desert to the city as she lists all her cravings. Exiting the album on “Want Pt.2”, acapella vocals are supported by a heart thump beat and acoustic guitar chords that balance her longings with her needs over a solid backbeat as she offers keeper one-liners, citing The Rolling Stones ‘you can’t always get what you want’ and Sade ‘love is stronger than pride’ as Esther Rose promotes her own mantra of ‘what you want’.

The cuts in the middle of the clear observations and advice of the opening and closing cuts, Esther Rose pulls back the curtain of the life sitting in the middle between wants and needs. She promises her heart on “Ketamine” and admits “Had To” on a strong foundation of rhythm that becomes a pulpit for her to deliver a sermonic anthem to drinking. The sonic backing for the tales on Want is Country Rock rhythms that can win hearts from honky tonks to festival stages. Dean Johnson joins in for “Scars” as “Color Wheel” spins on echoed church basement piano chords and ambient sounds. “Messenger” carries its tale on regimented guitar chords and “The Clown” performs on a revolving rhythm. Esther Rose is behind the wheel for the shifting song styles that gather on Want. She makes plans to “Rescue You” on a caffeinated groove, introducing the “New Bad” when Esther Rose paints a picture of a past, present, and future that travels on an electric instrumental symphonic soundscape.
