A little Punk and a little Country equals rough-around-the-edges Folk music. As a native of Appalachian coal country, Erik Vincent Huey picked up Blue Collar Country in younger years while also digging the left of the dial Indie Rock of of previous decades. All his influences are mixed together as a stew for his latest release, Fort Defiance; a gritty Singer/Songwriter effort that screams working class Indie Roots.
Kicking off on the lonely, pleading first track, “All Out of Angels”, Fort Defiance starts off soft before Huey’s band lays it on thick as he sings of bottles and old Country while pleading for an angel to dispel the lonesome. He moves through Rootsy Folk when “Grievous Angel” takes a subtle, south of the border spin, the Fort Defiance title track laying down a thick wall of Roots while “Jokerman” is a steady Garage Rocker that verifies Erik Vincent Huey’s listening homework dates back to the 1980’s. 

“The Gutter & The Stars” has a thick city vibe in a spoken-word love song where one partner wants the bright highs, the other accepting the dark lows. “Things You Left Behind” rattles off the miscellaneous things that go unclaimed in a breakup, reminding us ‘the saddest thing you left behind was me’. “40 Tons of Speed” is ripe for a truck-stop two step, Huey dropping a Rocker in “The Hatfield Action” as “King of Tears” is brought straight back from 1957.

This is American-made Roots Country; a twangy score where beat jobs and broken vehicles are stars of the song, while you cry in your beer and dream for a quick two step that beckons a lonely hookup.
