4/19/2025 Eric Schmitt (from the album Wait for the NightEric Schmitt (from the album Wait for the Night available as a self-release)
Chalk Eric Schmitt up for a sleeper hit thus far in 2025. Sleeper because Wait for the Night crept up and gave this reviewer a pleasurable knock to the ear, and sleeper because of its quiet, but serious, demeanor; the music is mellow, the lyrics visual, personable, humorous, real, and serious. There’s a Bluesy harmonica that drives the opener in “BR Blues” as Eric Schmitt sings of beer and bars, delight and doldrums. “One of these Days” is a sad and somber tale of a strong woman with a terrible dude (a tale many of us have watched from near and far in our personal lives), a cut that pulses along making you hope for the best for the gal, with backing vocals perfectly placed on this track, and a number of cuts, by Jodi James. “Buckets” features great guitar picking over a solid and simple beat, “Fools Parade” is animated and lounge-heavy, and “Tattoos, Diapers and Pills” has lovely keys riffs floating under the lyrics as Eric Schmitt sings of tough times in a heavy-hearted story. That heavy heartedness is kicked up a notch in the title-track closer, where ‘crying’ in your beer is replaced by full on blubbering; it is sad with a super capital “S”. This slacker Folk at its finest, a laid-back effort and minimalist record of mellow tunes that drift from Folk into dark Lounge and even (thanks to beautiful keyboard work) hints at Gospel.
