It’s a wonderful musical partnership. The music of Eric Brace and Thomm Jutz will make you think, make you tap a toe, and having you digging into the internet to learn more about a 20th Century painter who deserves some recognition. The latest from Eric Brace & Thomm Jutz, the marvelous Circle and Square, stretches beyond a Rootsy Folk album into a lesson in history, art, music, and people; Folk music is educational music on all levels. It’s also playful; the opener in “10 to 4” has an animated bounce as the duo take on the weirdness of time zones while lyrically painting vivid visuals, educational via “Thomas Hart Benton”, as they’ve penned a tune on a 20th Century artist and given it the train song treatment, while the Circle and Square title track will remind you about geometry while making you realize those images are everywhere. Then comes the weeper; the world lost a great musician/songwriter/journalist/baseball fan/Country music scholar in Pete Cooper, and “Nothing Hurts” is a heavy but human nod. So good. Eric Brace & Thomm Jutz nail a couple songs for the West. “On the Back of a Horse” has a Western-noir vibe that’s thickly descriptive, and the pair close with “Wide Open”, a cowboy song worthy of cowboy campfires and singalongs throughout the left side of the Mississippi. With thick harmonies, hearty melodies, and beautiful earthy art gracing the packaging, Eric Brace and Thomm Jutz knock this one out of the park.
