‘Here’s a hymn to the unholy, the savage and the true. You have only one life, dear, heed the voice that calls to you’. Against rolling sonic clouds, Emily Scott Robinson delivers a song and a DIY guide for the New Year. “Hymn for the Unholy” starts off the song cycle for Appalachia, the recent release from Emily Scott Robinson. Her powerful voice takes charge as she points fingers at the urbanization of her home, decrying everything from the destruction of landmarks to the closing of beloved dive bars with the line ‘if it ain’t gone yet, it’s going soon’ for “Dirtbag Saloon”. Produced by Josh Kaufman (solo, Bonny Light Horseman), Appalachia showcases the songs, and the top shelf talent, of Emily Scott Robinson. Soft acoustics circle and sparkle as her voice rises up in “The Fairest View” while Appalachia picks out a flurry of guitar notes to form a foundation on “Sea of Ghosts”. The singer/songwriter tells the tale “Time Traveler”, changing a medical diagnosis of a wandering mind into a super power. Sharing her intention for the songs, Emily Scott Robinson stated that ‘there’s this thing I do with every record I make. I knit a prayer into it, and I ask for all these songs to find their way to everyone who needs them. I ask these songs to be of service, to help people find and experience joy’. The Appalachiatitle track cries out to the weather threatening her home ground, citing her heritage as a reason for standing tall against nature’s force with claim ‘my people came from pain and famine, a hundred days on a dark sea. Do you think I’d let some wind and water tear the roots from me?’. Hope writes the story in “The Time for Flowers” as John Paul White joins Emily Scott Robinson in “Cast Iron Heart” as she partners with Duncan Wickel to deliver “The Water is Wide”.
