In San Francisco, Herb Caen was an influencer that pre-dated the term. A journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle, his daily dose of SF cultural and political doings were served with truths told through the lens humor and sharp observations. For Herb Caen, his audience was paired down one woman. Effie Zilch was the imaginary 40-something mother of two who sat comfortably at home surrounded by family and enjoying a relaxing cup of coffee or tea. Herb Caen’s muse gets a second life courtesy of San Francisco duo Effie Zilch. Working her way back into culture via Rock’n’Roll rhythms and guitar strums, Effie Zilch brings a new E.P. to the world, The Kitchen Sink. Whispered strings hush to begin the opening for The Kitchen Sink before the tune begins a sea shanty waltz with “Evergreen”. A count of three is uttered for the sharp-angled notes that form a framework for “Walk You Through” as rise in the rhythms hear the prayers sent out to “St. Lucia”. A wobbly groove carries Jimmy Reed’s “Baby What You Want Me to Do” while a shuddering shimmy wriggles across “Silence Tells a Secret”. Soft strumming cradles Bob Dylan’s tale of a busker’s European vacation when Effie Zilch exit The Kitchen Sink with “When I Paint My Masterpiece”.
