Indie Neo-Soul is a musical descriptor picking up some steam. With that buzz come artists playing the aforementioned, a genre with ties to specific sound yet a willingness to drift from said sound, leaving the door open for stretching boundaries. It works for Effie Zilch (not a person, but a duo with a band name worth investigation), a City by the Bay-based pair, digging into all that makes up neo- world; a sensual casserole of slow dance Soul, laidback, snap-your-fingers Funk, Rhythm, and Rock, whose latest release, Higher Callingshowcases city sounds that remain timeless. Laidback Soul lives in album opener, “Easy”, while a cut like “Lover Boy” is ripe for a Blaxploitation film-score. “Salton Sea” is easy-breezy cool, “Underneath the Weather” is a foot-tapper, snapper, and clapper, and the Higher Calling title track has thick, Gospel harmonies. The record wraps up with some Gospel Roots music when “Where We Go” flirts with twang, a Soulful number that could easily be at home for a Sunday morning Gospel set at a Bluegrass festival. Fans will dig the duo of Steve Wyreman and Evanne Barcenas, aka Effie Zilch, as they celebrate real music making that grooves down an avenue of modern day Soul , Motown, and electronic music with mellow Funk leanings.
