Donovan Woods has dropped a heavy record. The singer/songwriter has penned tunes for plenty of Music City and beyond heavy-hitters, but none may be more personal than the batch of songs found on his 5-song EP, Squander Your Gifts. It’s an album that is soft and subtle, quiet and quaint; written for late songwriting partner and pal Abe Stoklasa. There’s the gentle and soft album opener, a story that reflects how we keep memories of a too-early death alive in our thoughts; we talk about them. “I Talk About You” is just that, a nod to someone gone too soon, and a promise to ‘talk about you, to anybody whose gonna listen’. “Do It Right” features whispered vocals and gentle strumming in a cut that’s stripped-down like a bedroom demo tape while “Who Could Love You” finds Donovan Woods dropping vivid lyrics of the everyday in a Rootsy love song where orchestral strings and Country elements are as soft as his voice. The album closer, “Losing Everything”, finds that soft voice of Donovan Woods joined in quiet a harmonic duet by Anais Mitchell. Despite its quiet nature, Squander Your Gifts is thick with powerful instrumentation played with great restraint, a hushed recording that is equally thick with emotion, and loaded with guts and feeling.
