D.K. Harrell (from the album Talkin’ Heavy

D.K. Harrell (from the album Talkin’ Heavy available on Alligator Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
D.K. Harrell struts into his recent release Talkin’ Heavy on the solid groove of opening cut “A Little Taste”. A slow Blues stroll carries the message of “Life’s Lessons” while his guitar licks lead a march into “Vibe with Me” as the beat bounces underneath the claims of “Grown Now”. At 27 years-old, D.K. Harrell is a modern-age Bluesman, his guitar playing a flurry of flash and string bends. Talkin’ Heavy sees a next generation ascending to the throne with D.K. Harrell more-than-ready to accept both the crown and the responsibilities.

Politics and troubled times are the topics for the Talkin’ Heavy title track, D.K. Harrell pointing out that ‘the world is heavy with the Blues’ as he confesses that he ‘don’t know what to do’. His soulful vocals soaring as his fingers pull the Blues from his electric guitar on his Alligator Records debut. As a young gun guitarist, D.K Harrell immersed himself into the music of B.B.King, his schooling a study of every video he could find of the legendary guitar man.

Produced by Kid Andersen at his Greaseland Studios, Talkin’ Heavy perfectly balances Soul vocals with the sound of the Blues. The playing softens when D.K. Harrell begins his personal accounting with “Good Man” before the music erupts into a Blues romp as a soulful strut hears the claims of “What Real Men Do”. A caffeinated groove propels “PTLD” (post-traumatic love disorder) while a message reads that the only thing open late is “Liquor Stores and Legs” and a bright bounce surrounds the story of “Into the Room”. An open letter to the past is delivered by “No Thanks to You” as D.K. Harrell exits Talkin’ Heavy on the salvational march of “Praise These Blues’. (by Danny McCloskey)
