Starting things off with a challenge to follow the mighty riff coming from amplifiers turned up high, Dirty Honey make a promise with “Won’t Take Me Alive”. The song sets the pace as the band take the stage to draw back the curtain on Mayhem & Revelry Live, their latest release. The double disc of tracks was collected by Dirty Honey on their 60-date Sold Out headlining tour stretching between 2023 and 2024. Much like their live performances, Mayhem & Revelry crackles with sparks flying from a band on fire. Based in Los Angeles, California, Dirty Honey blends Blues string bends with high-energy guitar flash, creating an electrical punch over the course of two studio albums, their self-titled debut (2021) and its follow-up, 2023’s Can’t Find the Brakes. With songs that model the mission statement of Dirty Honey, the live effort sways with questions about just how far a relationship can go, and how much stress it can handle in “Another Last Time” as they plug into the power of the West Coast sun in the sonic blast of “California Dreamin’” and count “Scars” over a the crunch of six-strings while “When I’m Gone” racks up close to three minutes of electric guitar gymnastics before the cut kicks in. Frontman Marc LaBelle shares his beliefs about the live experience, and what prompted Dirty Honey to gather up songs form their tour for a live effort, saying that ‘to me, live albums have always been the quintessential corner stone for any rock band’s catalog. I grew up on Aerosmith’s 'A Little South of Sanity,' AC/DC’s ‘LIVE,' The Stones' 'Get Your Ya-Ya’s Out,' and Led Zeppelin’s 'How the West Was Won.’ There’s something beautiful about a band’s unbridled live energy mixed with an audience’s excitement that breathes new life into songs’. Aside from the double-albums physical and digital release, Mayhem & Revelry Live includes a companion four-part video documentary for tour visuals of both band and audience. Plucked notes quietly begin the rhythm cycle for the slow jam groove in “Rolling 7’s” as sharp-edged chords chop out a beat for “The Wire”. Dirty Honey get “Tied Up” in a tangle of electric riffs, exiting Mayhem & Revelry Live on the Bic-flicking closing anthem “You Make It All Right”.
