Dirt Road Souls (from the album (The Life and Times of) Johnny Moonshine

Dirt Road Souls (from the album (The Life and Times of) Johnny Moonshine available on Dirt Road Records) (by Danny McCloskey)

The (anti-) hero of the recent release from Dirt Road Souls begins the song cycle for (The Life and Times of) Johnny Moonshine. The track rattles and hums as it follows “Johnny Moonshine” down the mighty Mississippi to New Orleans.
Hope, both lost and found, along with the pitfalls that cause our collective feet to stumble and the sometimes bumpy, righteous road that leads to redemption come together as a muse for the stories on the album. The lead character’s surname hears a tale of running alcohol that travels the backroads of America in “Moonshine” while dark chords rise like thunderheads above “Wanderin’” as Dirt Road Souls cry out “Hold on Soul” and slowly strum a swaying rhythm that wraps around “Dreams”.

Presented as a Root Rock Opera, (The Life and Times of) Johnny Moonshine is staged by the trio of players in Dirt Road Souls. The Boston-based collective uses years of personal experience to scribe tales from the heart, and use the time spent as active members in the Boston music scene to give the music grit and groove. The shine of “Bright Light, White Heat” arrives courtesy of a hammering beat as (The Life and Times of) Johnny Moonshine raises a toast in “Whiskey Bottle Blues” and drops the needle on the scratchy sound of “Jenny’s Theme”. Hearts are beating in time to the assured rhythms, and the promise of a party, in “Next to You” as Dirt Road Souls dance along the (sometimes) sharp edge of memories claiming “It’s OK, I’m Alright” before exiting the album tenderly bidding “Goodbye Johnny”.
