Before busking became the go-to for outside performances, Doo Wop ruled the street corners. That’s where Dion DeMucci began, singing on the streets of The Bronx, and triggering a career that has lasted for 70 years. Beginning with backing from his band The Belmonts, Dion logged hits with “The Wanderer” and “Ruby Baby” before going solo in the early 1960’s, scoring more chart-toppers with “Runaround Sue” and “Lovers Who Wander”. He entered the Singer/Songwriter arena with his Folk Rock track “Abraham, Martin, and John”. He moved to Rock Pop for Yo, Frankie in 1989 (produced by Dave Edmunds), the album laying claim to his home turf with the gritty Rock’n’Roll story in “King of the New York Streets”. Matching the title to his recent memoir release, Dion returns with a new album, The Rock’n’Roll Philosopher. Mixing new material with songs that have been part of the Rock’n’Roll canon for seven decades, Dion explained in an interview with Billboard magazine that ‘I thought I would just let it run like a concert. That was my vision; if I had to do a set with a band, I’m gonna do these 16 songs in this order. It’s the perfect concert’. Rock’nRoll Philosopher backs Dion’s Doo-Wop hits with a dose of Folk Rock, revisiting “Ruby Baby”, “Runaround Sue”, and “The Wanderer” on the album as he offers an updated version of “Abraham, Martin, and John”, its message still vibrant in the musician’s delivery. New material get help from fans from who spread across the worldwide musical community on Rock’n’Roll Philisopher when Joe Bonamassa joins in for “Take It Back”. Sonny Landreth is on board for the Blues of “Cryin’ Shame” and Mark Knopfler helps out on the gypsy rhythms of “Dancing Girl”. Eric Clapton plugs in and plays as a backing for “If You Wanna Rock’n’Roll”, the boasts of the cut easy to take as truth when Dion dons the mantle of Rock’n’Roll Philosopher armed with songs that show his trajectory from NYC street corners to global stages.
