Deer Tick remains the band to break your heart and simultaneously Rock you out. A great live band with a solid catalog, and the ability to drop under-the-radar yet familiar (hello Replacements, or NRBQ) covers. The latest Deer Tick release, Coin-O-Matic, is a ballad and hook-heavy Rock album with jangly undertones and lyrics that dig into the underbelly of their home in Rhode Island.
Album opener, “Dog Years”, is singalong, slowed down to showcase the bands ability to move the melodies from ballad to big at a gradual pace while John McCauley remains fine front-person, in lyrical form on “Mary Singletary”, a cut that playfully references the glory of Warner Brothers cartoons. Deer Tick continues with the more than catchy “ACI” as McCauley sings of one man’s life rolling through the Rhode Island Adult Corrections Institute.
 Taking a vocal breather, “Endless Loop” is a dreamy, mid-tempo cut. “Everything Born” has the fantastic, picturesque line ‘smoking cough of a rodeo clown’ and “507 Smith” has a lazy, lounge vibe interrupted by fuzzy riffs. Album closer in “Candy Cigarettes” is a best of both worlds with Deer Tick showcasing their ability to write a heartbreaker mixed with an ability to make a load of quartet noise.
