10/18/2024 Dawes (from the Oh BrotherDawes (from the Oh Brother on Dead Ringers Records/Secretly Distribution) (by Bryant Liggett)
With a band like Dawes you should forego any generic descriptors and go straight to playful and passionate, daring and dramatic. That feeling lives in the sound you’ll hear in their latest Oh Brother, where you’ll file under good-to-great as you listen for the aforementioned expressiveness amongst subtle experimental melodies that float in a Pop sea. Oh Brother is a record with a lot of things to love, like the opening riff on “Front Row Seat” or the laidback, cool delivery of the first 20 seconds of “House Parties”. But then dig into the songs for the fun in a cut like “Mister Los Angeles”, where the first set of lyrics reference DMT along with ‘Protein Shakes and Ramen’ before quickly moving on to an act of purging and stretching. This critic doesn’t know much about L.A, but those movements go on everywhere. “Surprise” is a meditative, Psychedelic ballad with quiet vocals, “The Game” inspires a head bobbing trance, and “Hilarity Ensues” kicks off with the love tale of ‘knuckle-head one falls in love with knuckle-head two’. There’s a vintage soundtrack vibe to this catch-all album that screams nostalgia. It’s also patient, if not lazy, in its beautiful delivery of songs, it is Pop music digging into you at its very own pace.
