The latest from David Ramirez tips an audio hat to many styles. Subtle Electro-Lounge, Gothic Folk, 1980’s era New Wave, and head-bobbing Pop all find their way from Ramirez’s head to your listening device. His recent release, All the Not So Gentle Reminders, is a solid sonic cocktail, a blend that remains a subtle mix existing within a sound that is solely branded to David Ramirez. The opener in “Maybe It Was All A Dream” is a pulsing concoction of New Age and New Wave, a dreamy score that mutters the records title. “The Music Man” and “Dirty Martini” are both cuts ripe for a dark and smokey bar, the former kicking off with a killer but subtle piano riff. “I Got People” has a quaint bounce as Ramirez reveals details about the company he keeps, the runaway star of the cut being the stabbing guitar. “Twin Sized Beds” features Ramirez’s vocals delivered soft over percussive handclaps, and “Deja Voodoo” is as mysterious as the religion in the title. Ramirez then nails a haunting piano ballad in “Do Not Disturb Me”, his vocals dark and droning amongst a repetitive, pulsed piano. There’s a personable, if not homey, vibe to this album despite its mellow undertones, as if David Ramirez is your personal lounge singer in the dark bar of your mind.
