Danny & The Champions of the World have found great middle ground between traditional Roots music and the pulsing experimental of studio technology. That Roots side has a touch of heartland Rock, certainly not limited to the American heartland as Danny and band hail from the heartland of England. Combine that sound with a electric touch of 80’s new wave and you’re in the territory of You Are Not A Stranger Here. The latest release from Danny and the Champions of the World. As much as they are channeling heritage Roots Rock, they’re doing so with a strong ear to the realm of Indie, Experimental, and Ambient music. 
“Talking a Good Game” is a quiet opener both laidback and cool, while that experimental comes via track two in “Kicking Tyres”, a spacey, film-score of a track with random, audio samples and ambient pedal steel that pushes past 8 minutes. There’s a hypnotic, percussive rhythm, heard in “I’m In Love”, “The Robot Cries”, and “Sooner or Later”, the latter sounding as if it could have been plucked right out of 1986 thanks to delicately placed keys; it is both throwback and future sounds. 
More wonderful bits come via short blasts of sound through “Every Door You Have Ever Opened”, “In Search of Koji”, and “The Poetics of Space”. They’re bits of hushed jam, tossed into the record because they can as they serve as fun little bridges between the more traditional cuts. Strip away the bits of the experimental and you’ve got a straight-ahead Roots record, but the snippets of sound and added ambience give this record some extra, albeit mellow, kick. (Bryant Liggett)
