You can throw around a lot of loose descriptors that fit the Danny Golden vibe; Indie Folk, Singer/songwriter, even a bit of a bar band troubadour. These are all apt ways to describe the musician, and his latest, The Big Blue, hints at touches of Roots Pop, Midwestern Rock, 80’s jangle, and loads of other ways to call out his cuts with all the style designations fitting into the music.
There’s the album opener, “Hungry Ghost”, where Danny Golden’s stream-of-consciousness lyrics are delivered with precise Pop leanings, a cut with good time ramblings where our storyteller is also carrying a bit of self-questioning. That self-questioning carries into the thick “War Fever” as Golden sings about survival. The jangle of a guitar comes in with “The Messenger (Surrender)”, where Danny Golden, whether he knows it or not, makes a great Paul Westerberg / Replacements reference via Jesus and cigarettes. “Great American Novel #2” is a bouncy barroom Rocker. It contains the life-lesson lyric ‘times never wasted when you get your clock cleaned’; arguable but appropriate if you learn why that clock did get cleaned.
Amidst the learning about yourself via The Big Blue’s mid-tempo Rock are a few ballads; the closer a weeper in “Fare Thee Well” where Golden sings of a lover, friend, or someone close moving on. Danny Golden delivers a solid package, a record with groovy Rockers and ballads, all coming with lyrics ready to make you learn through life experiences. (by Bryant Liggett)
