According the songman Dan Penn, the Smoke Filled Room title track on his recent release took a minute to reach the world. Dan shared that ‘I’ve been trying to get this song cut for a long time. Andy Peake played drums on it and that allowed me to sing it. Billy Lawson gave me a great mixdown, which finally sounded right’. Referencing the studio is second nature to Dan Penn. From his first hit, recorded by Conway Twitty, in 1960, his songwriting has been heard in many chart-toppers such as “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man”, “The Dark End of the Street”, “I’m Your Puppet", ”A Woman Left Lonely", and “Cry Like a Baby”. The ambient sound of voices fills in the background of “Smoke Filled Room” as track begins the song cycle on the album. The overpowering sound of an electric piano wraps around Dan Penn as he sets a goal for tomorrow in “The Longest Day” while the slow steady rhythms of classic Soul support the story of “There’s Nothing Out There” and an Rock’n’Soul sway hears the confessions of “Hellbound Snowball”.

After his initial success, Dan Penn left his home in Vernon, Alabama to take up residence in Muscle Shoals as a songwriter. The songs of Smoke Filled Room continue to promote the Soul sounds of Memphis and Muscle Shoals. A salvational piano march leads the way across “Creator of All Things” as Smoke Filled Room makes a plea for peace in a world gone mad with “Let Love Begin with Me”. “One Blue Light” shines brightly in the glow of holiday decorations. A life of rhythm lets the sounds of the Mississippi delta flow over the album as Dan Penn sings of “Battling the Blues” and becomes a member in good standing of the “Blues of the Month Club”.
