Coming quickly on the heels of Live at the Palladium, credited to Damon Fowler & Friends, Barnyard Smile marks another significant step on Fowler’s evolution to the upper tier of today’s Blues music elite. Representative of a younger and dynamic generation of musicians who pay heed to tradition while paving their own path forward, Damon Fowler has honed his chops by working alongside Gregg Allman, Jeff Beck, Little Feat, Delbert McClinton, George Thorogood, Johnny Winter, Robin Trower, Jimmie Vaughn, Edgar Winter and any number of others who recognized and recruited him for his prowess and passion. True to form, the new album finds him paying homage to old school styles while infusing his own personality and perspective into the music as well. His affection for the Blues is apparent, as indicated by the steady strut of “That Ain’t Love”, the vibe and verbosity of “Outskirts of Town” as well as the trudging tempo that steers “Fast Driving Woman”. On the other hand, Fowler has obvious reverence for more soulful sounds as well, evidenced with the easy sway and old school vibe infused in “These Games We Play” and the blissful ballad “My Friend My Friend”. Damon Fowler takes that dutiful devotion to a decided degree courtesy of Bo Diddley’s rock-steady staple “Road Runner” and an emphatic take on Jerry Reed’s “Misery Loves Company”, but given his prowess and personality, he manages to put an individual stamp on each. He’s aided by a steady rhythm section consisting of bassist Chuck Bailey and drummer Justin Headley, and it’s due to their steady support that these songs consistently take flight. The end results are bound to elicit smiles not only from the barnyard, but everyone else that witnesses them as well.
