5/1/2026 Dale Watson (from the album UnwantedDale Watson (from the album Unwanted on Forty Below Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
The people that say ‘they don’t make music like they used to’ are normally the same folks not paying attention to new releases. When someone applies that to Country music they’re usually implying that they yearn for the Outlaw days. While Willie may be the last one standing, that early brand of Country has never really gone anywhere, at least not if Dale Watson has anything to say about it. The Austin, Texas-based Country crooner has stuck to his Old School Country guns throughout his career, especially on his latest release, UNWANTED. His baritone voice and an Outlaw sneer charge across the album opener, “Willie Waylon and Whiskey”, as Watson gives a nod to why Outlaw Country is so well loved. “She Was My Baby” and “Gotta Try Harder” both dig into a Honky Tonk Boogie vibe while “What the Hell Happened to the Cadillac” has Dale Watson waxing nostalgic on a disappearing classic. It’s also a cut that finds him questioning what the hell happened to everything; he’s moaning about change but understands that for true classic sounds, you have to dig deeper as the sound is out there to be found. Celine Lee is a fantastic duet partner on the ballad “You’ve Got My Heart”, and “Don’t Let the Honky Tonk Go” is a dance-floor banger. The closing title track is a cut that’s rough, noble, and tough. Unwanted is classic album in both its nod to an Old School vintage sound for 2026; a record that’s modern-day musical proof that Country is still cool.
