Courtney Marie Andrews (from the album Valentine

Courtney Marie Andrews (from the album Valentine available on Loose Future Records/Thirty Tigers) (by Danny McCloskey)

Her voice rising with crystalline perfection, Courtney Marie Andrews wears the skin of the “Keeper” and expresses her appreciation for the love in arm’s reach with “Magic Touch”. Finding the balance between heartache and hope, Courtney Marie Andrews reflects her personal journey on Valentine, her recent release. Describing the process as well as the results, she shares that ‘it's a record in pursuit of love. But love, it turns out, is a lot more than I gave it credit for...I was in one of the darkest periods of my life, and songs were the only way I could reckon with it’.

The tales trace her life from daily struggles to eventual optimism; story lines stretched between endings and beginnings. She vows to give “Only the Best for Baby” as she replays the ‘movie in my mind’ with sluggish strums for “Hangman” and inches the rhythm up just a little for the slow walk that carries the beat through “Everyone Wants to Feel Like You Do”. Of the song, Courtney explained that ‘this is the kind of person who lives in a world solely of their own puppeteering. The person whose life has the main character energy. The privileged kind, unconcerned with the marginalized. In the guitar solo, I wanted to play like someone with this entitlement; someone unaware of their effect on others’. The request of “Best Friend” hears Valentine wish for a trusted companion as it foregoes painful risks seeking to be an “Outsider”. A metronome beat opens the album with “Pendulum Swing” as Courtney Marie Andrews floats on a hard-edged groove to confidently display her decisions in “Little Picture of a Butterfly” and uses guitar strums to soften the fears of a ‘scary world’ in “Cons and Clowns”.
