Acoustic Folk and bright Americana rhythms accompany the Couldn’t Be Happiers as they search for gold in “brown mountain lights” as a dark mood shares the story of “pretty polly” while the band spins a reel around “tear it down” and trot on a Country Folk beat with “weatherman”. The songs are gathered on the recent release from Couldn’t Be Happiers, Couple(t)s. The album title is a nod to the married duo that are the band members. Jodi Hildebran Lee shares that ‘the couplet is simple and powerful–much like Folk music. But it’s also an apt metaphor for our relationship. A couplet is a pair of rhyming lines with the same meter. Each line is made up of different words, but they always come together at the end. Likewise, my bandmate, and husband, Jordan Crosby Lee and I are completely different people, but we work in concert for the same goal of creating unique, but relatable, Folk music’. A train-track beat supports “king of austin” as a rattle of rhythm rambles underneath the dreams of the highway in “come back tomorrow” and a love story of two travelers plays out for “wherever you go’. The Couldn’t Be Happiers use wit to develop the stories on Couple(t)s, wrapping the tales in warm acoustics that touch on influences in the well-crafted songs. Assured chords create a rhythm for “plastic bag odyssey (I’ll never die)” as mortality is the muse for “when I die” while Couldn’t Be Happiers walk across “devil’s tramping ground” and exit Couple(t)s on the Indie Folk that walks across “lydia’s bridge”.
