11/22/2025 Colter Wall (from the album Memories and EmptiesColter Wall (from the album Memories and Empties available on Black Hole Music/La Honda Records/RCA) (by Danny McCloskey)
The voice of Colter Wall is like a favorite shirt, ragged and rough, warm and comfortable. Coming from the prairies of Saskatchewan, he brings stories of time spent with Memories and Empties on his recent release. The album is a collection of tunes that are at once familiar, arriving like the return of an old friend. The tale of “Back to Me” rides a horse-hoof rhythm as Colter Wall opens his heart while he watches the dancers slowly take a spin around a sawdust floor, shuffling as he confesses “My Present Just Gets Past Me”. Memories and Empties begins its song cycle when Colter Wall sings of the distance from his home somewhere in the middle of Canada to Music Row with “1800 Miles” while he slowly picks out acoustic guitar notes to support the title track, keeping the acoustic backing for the life advice that likens gambling on love to a card game in “Summer Wages”, and taps a toe for the promises of long-lasting relationship in “Like the Hills”. Since his decade ago debut (Imaginary Appalachia) Colter Wall has consistently released high-quality music that keeps its commitment to Country & Western songs made for a honky tonk jukebox that promises tears for every beer. His plaintive vocal utters a prayer in “4/4 Time”, hoping that ‘the Lord don’t mind 4/4 time’, picking up the pace to a trot for the rhythms in “The Longer You Hold On”, and hitting full gallop on the caffeinated strums of “It’s Getting So (That a Man Can’t Go into Town Just to Have Him a Drink”.
