2/20/2026 Clay Street Unit (from the album Sin & SqualorClay Street Unit (from the album Sin & Squalor available on Leo33 Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
First listen to Denver’s Clay Street Unit and you’ll hear familiar sounds ripe for the festival circuit. Dig a little deeper into their debut, Sin & Squalor, and you’ll hear a band with Alternative Country leanings, cuts ripe for the Cosmic Country crowd, heady Country ballads that live comfortably alongside their NewGrass sounds. Call it all Roots Americana from young pickers who dig into the rich sounds of American string bands and heavier Roots Rock. Cuts like “Nothing Else Matters” and “Where Have You Gone” follow in the great Colorado Jam Grass traditions, where the picking of heavy string bands floats over the click-clack rhythms of dancing feet in a festival field. Then come the ballads; “Let’s Get Stoned” is subtle and soft, a slow cut detailing hanging with your best partner, a tune ripe to score a slow dance, while “Choctaw County” is a Classic Country inspired duet. “Freightline Blues” is the kind of cut that will pack a mountain-bar dancefloor, “Rollin’” is a contemplative ballad, and the closer in “Way Over Yonder” exits the record in a stretched-out, dramatic fashion. They dig into the best of Roots music. The light fun of a string band, vivid story time lyrics, and a Southern Rock vibe, Clay Street Unit combines the best in Colorado Jam Grass and Southern Roots Rock into a tight, musical package.
