Chris O’Leary (from the album Blue Collar

Chris O’Leary (from the album Blue Collar available on Alligator Records) (by Danny McCloskey)

Keeping in Blues tradition, Chris O’Leary struts into Blue Collar, his recent release, waving the flag of “Bed Decisions”. A deep rumble of rhythm cruises underneath the admissions in “Nothing but a Memory” as Blue Collar rips up the real wood flooring that supports the honky tonk dance zone when “Live Bay Gators” chews up the scenery.  A potent second line beat leads a procession into an uptown Saturday Night groove on a “One Way Street” while the caffeine buzz kicks in way before Chris O’Leary makes a request of an all-night waitress with “One More Cup of Coffee”.

The man is a triple threat when Chris O’Leary blasts Blues from his harmonica on breaths that incorporate the true sounds of the genre: Chicago Blues, Memphis Soul, and New Orleans Funk. Blue Collar collects the sounds as a brand on the album when a slow Blues stroll crawls after “Lady Luck” while a Kansas City Rock’n’Rhythm band enters the courtroom with “Justice Must Be Blind” to back a music man on trial. A slow-rolling mood simmers in the late-night noir moods of “How’d I Ever Get Along” as Blue Collar checks the clock with good intentions that disappear at midnight as the party continues after-hours with “After 2 A.M.”. Chris O’Leary gets serious on an equally regimented rhythm asking “Am I the Only Fool?” as he exits the album singing the roots of his family tree with “Daddy Was a Wolfman”. (by Danny McCloskey)
