Charley Crockett (from the album Lonesome Drifter

Charley Crockett (from the album Lonesome Drifter is available on Lone Star Records/Island Record/BMG) (by Danny McCloskey)
I have only seen Hank Williams perform in my mind. Aside from the man’s short life, his career spanned just six years; his time on stage ended way before my need to be at a show even began. Nonetheless, I have an image that is pretty much embodied by seeing Charley Crockett perform. The man has the same lanky cowboy look and feel, a smooth, easy delivery, and a natural musical intuition that translates traditional sounds and presents them as a fresh as a loaf of bread cooling on the windowsill. The two men are separated by decades; however, they share the rare ability to churn out songs at a rapid rate. And, equally unique, seem to present cuts that immediately become part of the soul listening to the stories.
On his recent release, Charley Crockett is the Lonesome Drifter, telling his story on train track rhythm as he opens the album on the title track.  The harmonica blows like a lonesome train whistle moving over the open prairie when Charley Crockett draws the line in “Never No More” as he details both his past and present on a frenetic beat that sparkles with riffs satelliting the groove. Lonesome Drifterfollows ragged chord strums that begin the orchestrally textured tale in “This Crazy Life” and lays out the “Life of a Country Singer” that mirrors the day-to-day living of the guy on the album cover. Hurdles and hard times are fodder for the songs of Charley Crockett as he becomes the “Night Rider” and watches love drift away on the current underneath the “Jamestown Ferry” while he bares his soul in the stories of “One Trick Pony” and “Game I Can’t Win”. Lonesome Drifter makes an exit with a cover version when Charley Crockett borrows a tune from George Strait, “Amarillo by Morning”.
